Joining Calorie Camp
Alex sent in a report on how he walked off 75 pounds. He has good advice, the same you have heard from me -- you need to eat fewer calories than you burn off each day, while still getting the healthy nutrition you need. A combination of more activity and exercise, plus eating fewer empty calories, will lead to steady weight loss. This is the basis of my free Walk of Life 70-Day Program.

Race to the Moon - Every Body Walk!
Health insurers know it pays to keep people healthier. HealthAmerica launched its Race to the Moon program in October, 2011. They sent free activity monitors to over 2000 subscribers to enlist them in a virtual group goal of walking from the earth to moon. They sent me a kit so I could try it out and interviewed other participants.

Steps to More Steps Per Day
How can you be more active throughout the day and beat the health effects of being inactive? Here are some steps to begin.
- Wear a pedometer - it's the best and easiest way to know how much you really are moving each day.
- Set a step goal that is 2000 steps more than what you log right now on a typical day.
- Wear comfortable shoes to work or school so you can fit in bouts of walking throughout the day.
- Find cues to get out of your chair every 15 minutes throughout the work day. Whenever you take a call, stand up and pace around. This will help battle the health effects of sitting too long at any one time.
- Spend most of your breaks and half of your lunch time walking. This should easily add 3000 to 7000 steps to your daily total.
- Aim for 30 to 60 minutes of moderately-intense exercise, such as a steady bout of brisk walking, as its own activity. This will bring you the health and weight loss benefits of aerobic exercise. ...

Starting Over After an Injury
If you haven't been walking for fitness for over two months due to an injury, you may wonder how to start over again to rebuild your walking program. I've had this experience several times. Plantar fasciitis, knee injury and sprained ankle were the causes for me. But many have had a break due to a long respiratory illness or other malady. Once the pain had cleared and my doctor gave me the go-ahead, I started fresh and slowly like somebody new to fitness walking.

Successful Training Gives Leaders Tools to Grow their Memberships
Recently, one of our member organizations told us they didn’t just want to match the more than 12,000 members of San Francisco Bicycle Coalition — they wanted to exceed it. What better way to do that than send their membership coordinator to learn tactics and methods from Kate McCarthy, the well-known and respected Membership Director of SF Bicycle Coalition, and Ellis Robinson, a leading guru in the membership development field.
Thirty-eight bicycle and pedestrian advocates — representing three countries, 24 states and provinces, 33 cities, and 30 Alliance member organizations — attended the second Alliance Membership Development Training, July 20-22. Hosted with special support from the Active Transportation Alliance in Chicago, the training offered two-and-a-half days of instruction, sharing of best practices, small group break-outs, and, of course, outside-the-training networking time for Alliance leaders to connect with each other and build those long-lasting and supportive peer relationships.
It also set out an ambitious goal for the bike-ped movement: The Alliance challenged the attendees to double their organization’s membership within three years. With the skills they learned, they’re ready and willing to take on that mission.
“I appreciated this training so much,” Elizabeth Stampe of Walk San Francisco said. “I can’t wait to implement the terrific ideas I got from my colleagues and the trainers to double our membership!”
Sue Prant from Community Cycles in Boulder, CO, echoed that sentiment: “This training gave us tools to help us refine our membership program, as well as giving us tips and ideas for new activities to engage and recruit new members.”
Tom Rousculp, from the Bicycle Transportation Alliance in Portland, OR, added: “The Alliance training has given me the skills and tools to take our membership program to the next level in a thoughtful and professional way.”
In addition to the training itself:
- SRAM hosted a “Welcome to Chicago” social on Wednesday evening
- Participants observe a pit stop — Active Transportation Alliance’s adaptation of the SF Bicycle Coalition’s Service Station
- Attendees gained first-hand knowledge of the city’s infrastructure with a bike ride and walking tour
- The entire group ended Thursday with a gathering in Millennium Park
Whether participants connected with peer groups working in similar geographic or modal scope, or gained insight on the improvements they need to make within their organization to grow their membership, the evaluations indicated that every participant walked away with new and powerful knowledge.
“Connecting with my peers over the better part of three days has not only given me new ideas but also a network to contact with questions and concerns as I grow our membership,” Cait Costello from Palmetto Cycling Coalition in Columbia, SC, said.
Elena Santogade from Transportation Alternatives in NYC described the training as “Inspiring, exhausting, exhilarating — a must-attend.”
Carol Feucht from the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition summed it up: “After this training, I have confidence that my job matters. Members and volunteers matter, and I’m glad a training like this exists for bike and ped orgs.”

MapMyDOGWALK App Debuts
Those clever folks at MapMyWalk have a new free iPhone app aimed at dog walkers. MapMyDOGWALK works pretty much like the other iMapMy apps for walking, running, biking, etc. But it is sponsored by Subaru and includes features for both you and Fido. Besides mapping and measuring your walks, you can geo-tag photos and add them to your saved routes. That ability was formerly only available for the iMapMy+ apps and not the free ones. You can tweet your walk or post it to Facebook.

San Francisco Advocates Launch Family Biking Guide and Classes
Like many advocacy organizations, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is working to create a city where all residents — from ages 8 to 80 — feel safe and comfortable walking and biking for transportation and recreation. But, to make that inspiring concept a reality, SFBC knows they need more than crosswalks and bikeways. They need to expand their resources and redefine who they serve, too.
If you survey the streets, it’s not just individual riders pedaling to work. It’s moms with newborns and dads with toddlers two-wheeling to daycare and swinging by the grocery store. So SFBC is making sure the needs of the modern family fit seamlessly with the bicycling lifestyle.
With a large and growing membership, the SFBC recognized that: “Family biking is often a very different experience than biking on your own. Whether you biked a lot before becoming a parent, are just getting back to biking after years away, or want to teach your kids to bike, you very likely have questions about how to approach each stage of family biking.”
So Kit Hodge, along with some SFBC board members and advocates, have endeavored to answer those very questions. The first resource is a new online Family Biking Guide that tackles important topics like:
- Biking pregnant, including advice for each trimester and general tips like what type of bike to ride to accommodate your baby bump
- Biking with your baby or young toddler, including tips for before and after your baby can sit up and suggestions for overcoming legitimate fears for your baby’s safety
- Teaching your child to bike, including an outline of skills to teach to get your kid street ready
But the guide is just the first step. This week, SFBC is kicking off of a three-part family biking class. The free, 90-minute sessions include Biking Pregnant, Biking With Your Baby & Toddler, and Biking Your Child to School.
Kit says she hopes the guide and classes will be an inspiration to current cyclists who don’t want to give up riding because they have a family.
“I suspect that we’ve been losing some people to that transition, at least for a few years,” she says. “The initiative is also part of our overall messaging about 8-to-80 biking in San Francisco, and goes hand in hand with our communications focus on safe and respectful riding this Winter and Spring as we head to crucial votes on new, next generation bikeway projects and implementation.”

Advocates Bring Open Streets to the Heart of Downtown Chicago
On October 1, Chicago advocates celebrated the first open streets initiative since 2009 — and they went big.
The initiative was held on the city’s iconic State Street in the heart of downtown, and was titled Open Streets on State Street. Unlike the initiative in New York City, which was organized by the NYC DOT, Chicago’s initiative was put on by local Alliance member organization Active Transportation Alliance, in cooperation with the Chicago Loop Alliance.
While Active Trans has organized open streets in the past, this was the advocates first time preparing an initiative downtown. In anticipation of the time commitment, the organization hired several part-time staff members to help coordinate volunteers, programming and logistics for the big event. Active Trans also partnered with local media to spread the word.
The initiative itself was a huge success, with thousands of pedestrians and cyclists enjoying a brisk fall day. Children were everywhere along the route, enjoying relay races, the imagination playground and plenty of active games. Even Chicago Transportation Commissioner Gabe Klein got in on the fun by taking a turn in the dunk tank.
Active Trans Open Streets Manager Julia Kim summed up Open Streets on State Street by saying, “We’re encouraging people to ride bikes, take a stroll, and embrace the dramatic beauty of Chicago. Open Streets brings communities together to have fun and lead active lifestyles.”
With the success of this year’s initiatives, Active Trans is already looking forward to holding more frequent and larger open streets next year. The goal is to create routes that link downtown and neighborhood initiatives, allowing Chicago’s open streets to benefit both its diverse communities and major business district.
Learn more about the evolution of Chicago’s initiative and get tips from Active Trans’ Adolfo Hernandez by listening to or downloading the tip sheet from our recent Mutual Aid Call on Open Streets. If you have successes to share about initiatives in your community, e-mail me at Mike@PeoplePoweredMovement.org.

South West Coastal Path Walks
Looe to Polperro is one of my favourite Cornwall walks mainly due to it being, apart from the Looe River walking route, the only walk to do along this section of the South West Coastal Path of any note. The title Looe to Polperro circular walking routes suggests a walk of extra interest but it should just be titled “Looe to Polerro and back”.
We awoke to an amazing sunrise and planned to walk to Polperro from West Looe for a spot of lunch at The Three Pilchards pub, a favourite of ours that does a great crab sandwich and local ale. It’s such an easy walk to follow along the South West Coastal Path that you can relax and take the steep climbs, rocky tracks and stream crossings at your leisure whilst breathing in that clean, crisp and fresh Cornish air.
From West Looe we walked up to Hannafore and upon entering the fields through the gate we met grazing cattle on our way up to the Lamanna Chapel. After stopping to read the information board we walked back down the hill to rejoin the main pathway to Polperro following the yellow waymakers for the rest of this walking route.
With Looe Island, looking like a vibrant green oasis, out to our left we continued walking to Talland Bay as the pathway undulated along by the flat calm sea below. We then walked steeply up to the war memorial at the top of the next hill. At Talland Bay there are three signposts; one says Polperro is one and a half miles, the next says Polperro is one and a quarter miles and the last National Trust Talland Cliffs signpost said its two miles to Polperro. This is always a source of our amusement.
We continued our walk along the South West Coastal Path passing many ramblers, walkers, locals and tourists until we reached the top of Polperro Harbour where we then walked down the pathway in to Polperro and around to The Three Pilchards pub. The ale was as good as ever and the crab sandwiches were just as good as remembered.
As the weather was so good we decided to walk back the way we came to enjoy the splendid views once again noticing how the number of canoeists almost matched the number of walkers in the sea below us. The heat from the sun glaring off the sea was an absolutely lovely feeling as we walked back to Looe stopping off at the first pub we came to; Tom Sawyer. A quick check to make sure our walking boots weren’t too muddy and we were in, at the bar and with a Tribute in hand in a matter of moments!
This made this walking route a respectable 10 miles taking us just under a total of 4 hours walking time to complete.
